The Bulgarian Society for the Protection (BSPB) was founded in 1988. Its aim is the conservation of birds and their habitats. The first nature centres in the country were created by BSPB, here at Poda and another in Madsharowa in the Rhodope mountains.

The BSPB has helped to bring the Griffon vulture back to Bulgaria and is one of Bulgaria 's largest organisations devoted to wildlife conservation.

It has a membership of 3000 and branches in 40 locations throughout the country. As a recognition of its achievements in conservation BSPB became a partner in BirdLife International giving worldwide recognition for its work.

There is even a British branch of BSPB for supporters living in the UK . For more information visit BSPB's website www.bspb.org
By working with local schools we encourage an interest in wildlife amongst local children. Each year at Poda BSPB organises a 'Bird Olympic Games' a competition for children from nearby schools.
Poda schools can exhibit their pupils work in natural history and older students can study here for exams or help as a volunteer.
